Aquarium Adventure, a great Ecoxotic dealer in Columbus, Ohio, has for a third year participated in Metro High School’s aquatic science program. Led by science teacher, Peter DeWitt, this innovative program gives students a hands-on, applied learning of geography, biology and chemistry through studying a team-created aquatic environment.
“The past two years we’ve partnered with Peter on donating a few tanks and equipment, and offered our teacher discount,” says Bill Wymard owner of Aquarium Adventure. “This year he suggested that we do the program in a big way allowing more students to participate in the program.” This year the Living Aquaria program will reach 160 students in the 9th – 11th grades.
This is where Wymard approached Ecoxotic. Knowing that they would have to transition to smaller tanks to meet the needs of more students, Wymard immediately thought of the EcoPico, our 5-gallon LED aquarium.
We couldn’t say no to such a cool program and we gladly donated 40 EcoPicos. We share Wymard’s excitement for education of aquatic life and the aquarium hobby. We’re hoping that this program will inspire kids to think more about our impact on the environment and get a few hooked into becoming hobbyists. “This program is so much more than just simply setting up a tank,” says Ike Eigenbrode of Ecoxotic, “It’s a great hands-on educational experience.”
With four students to a team, each team must create a sustainable aquatic environment with plants and animals based on the landscape they choose (salt water reef, East African rocky lake, South American backwater pool, Southeast Asia stream, etc.). The students are supplied with one EcoPico per team and $25 gift card per student to shop at Aquarium Adventure.
We are proud to be involved with such a smart and innovative program. Congrats to Peter DeWitt and Metro High School for such enthusiasm and out-of-box thinking toward learning. Big thanks to Aquarium Adventure for getting us involved with this incredible community outreach program. You set a wonderful standard for education and involvement; we’re impressed with your marketing with heart and integrity.
We look forward to reading reports on the students Living Aquaria blog, particularly the team that took on LED lighting effects on coral growth and coloration. Maybe a scientific study would help finally quiet the LED naysayers.
